They are a special type of engine timing gear that integrates a phase-adjusting mechanism, used to directly drive the camshaft and dynamically change valve opening/closing timing according to engine speed and load.

Main Structure & Working Principle

Usually a vane-type hydraulic adjuster built into the timing gear.

Controlled by the ECU via engine oil pressure.

Rotates the camshaft at a small angle relative to the crankshaft:

Advance timing → better high-speed power

Retard timing → better low-speed torque and idle stability
